Mexico City (CDMC) is one of the most populous cities in the world, and offers visitors enormous historical, cultural and geographical opportunities for inquiry. The City is situated on a plateau 7,350 feet above sea level. Most of the city sits on land that was once a lake, Lake Texcoco.

Being a first time visitor (2023), I found the neighborhood of Xochimilco (so-chee-mill-co) to be among the most interesting and colorful. The following photos of the canals, market (mercado), church, and Xochimildo Carnival were taken in that neighborhood.

Colorfully painted gondolas docked at one of the embarcaderos.

Taking a break.

Part of the neighborhood includes the large church, San Bernadino de Siena.

Next to the church are topiary shaped to represent Jesus and Mary.
