My wife and I made a trip to Nova Scotia, Canada in 1990, shortly after we were married. Living in Mt. Vernon, NY at the time, we decided to drive to Bar Harbor, ME, take the car ferry to Yarmouth and make a loop around Nova Scotia. This year, in 2026, more than three decades later, we decided to do a similar trip, but with some significant differences. For one, besides being older, I now had both a 4x5 and 5×7 large format camera and wanted to take photos of the coast. For this trip, i drove much the same route we did years ago, following the John Cabot Trail in Cape Breton and taking photos along the way. Another difference for this trip is my wife flew from New York to Halifax thereby avoiding a lot of unnecessary downtime for her while I was taking photos.. We explored Halifax and used it as a base to toke day trips to nearby communities such as Peggy’s Cove, the French Acadian memorial at Grand Pre and walk the Bay of Fundy at low tide. What follows are black and white photos of my driving trip, starting with Cheticamp on the west side of Nova Scotia and ending with Blue Stone on the east side. The photos were taken using HP5+ film.
